Horses, wagons and barrels in Anvil Empires

A Horse can pull vehicles, a Donkey can carry supplies with a Pack Saddle, and a Resource Wagon carries heavy loads. A Caravan carries the equipment for establishing a Camp or Fortress. Choose the transport for that job, then prepare its equipment and supplies before loading.

A Caravan, Resource Wagon and Hand Cart serve different transport jobs.

Riding, carrying and mill work need different equipment

Use a Basic Saddle to ride a Horse. A Pack Saddle enables the cargo slots on a Donkey, while a Basic Saddle enables the cargo slots on a Horse. A Mill Harness connects either animal to a mill. Several Donkey animals can be linked and led with Rope; the saddle for carrying supplies is not the harness for mill work.

Make the barrels inside your pack saddles

For three Pack Saddle, prepare three Barrel, three Thin Leather and three Linen. The barrels are consumed during saddle assembly, so they are not extra containers left for the load. Start with the Wood Planks for those barrels rather than bringing only the final saddle ingredients.

Three Barrel are prepared for the saddle recipe. The Wood Planks has already been made in the earlier step.

The final Pack Saddle recipe is assembled at an Advanced Workbench. This example begins with prepared Linen, and includes the Town Workshop recipes for the leather and planks. A different plank recipe changes the log you need; it does not change the final saddle's ingredient list.

The final Pack Saddle step consumes the prepared Thin Leather and Barrel, together with Linen.

Prepare saddles and transport supplies

Prepare feed before collecting the animal

Equine Feed restores a horse's health and stamina. Its Town Workshop recipe uses Cabbage Seed and Silver. Prepare a chosen quantity rather than treating it as a prediction of how long a journey will take. Animals housed in a Stable feed from stored food and water and can breed there.

Buy transport or raise animals

The Marketplace offers vehicles and mounts without first establishing a breeding operation. Horses and donkeys must be well fed before being listed for sale, and a livery fee applies. Check that fee separately from the cost of preparing their equipment and feed.

Pack loose supplies into barrels

Pack loose food and equipment into a Barrel before loading a Resource Wagon or Hand Cart. Barrels can be packed and unpacked at Keeps, Camps and Homesteads: drag an item stack onto the barrel in the packing slot. Partially filled barrels are allowed; packing does not require a full stack.

A Hand Cart loaded with Barrel containers brings loose supplies together for transport.

Are the barrels in a pack-saddle recipe spare cargo containers?

The Barrel is an ingredient consumed when making a Pack Saddle. Prepare separate barrels for supplies you intend to pack into the vehicle.
